Harlequin WoodSpring floor for Scottish Ballet at Tramway

British Harlequin plc recently installed Harlequin WoodSpring in two studios, one with Studio surface and one with Cascade surface, at Tramway in Glasgow - a well-respected contemporary arts venue in Glasgow’s inner city. Further dance floors will be installed later in studios located in Scottish Ballet’s new building being constructed as an extension of the existing Tramway.

Harlequin WoodSpring known familiarly as “basketweave” uses a counterbatten configuration comprising at least three layers of highly flexible southern softwood battens, placed on top of each other at right angles. The intermediate layer acts as a spring to the top layer which is laid at the centre of the span formed by the intermediate layer over the bottom layer. In the Harlequin WoodSpring system, shock absorption and energy return are enhanced by elastomer pads attached to the underside of the bottom layer.

Scottish Ballet is widely recognised as having an exceptionally high artistic standard, yet its future and ability to extend educational and dance-sector support have been severely hampered by the Company’s current dilapidated premises in Glasgow’s West End. The £11m project currently underway will address these problems and includes the construction a tailor-made home for Scottish Ballet, which will also provide dance studios for the West of Scotland’s independent professional dance groups. The Education Suite, the Independent Professional Dance Studio and some administration spaces are housed in a renovated section of Tramway. The improved facilities for Scottish Ballet at Tramway will also enable the Company to now extend its repertoire and to tour more widely.
